    Fired Christian lecturer defends comments about homosexuality in court

    A Christian lecturer fired by a Bible faculty over social media feedback about homosexuality has informed a courtroom that publicly expressing his beliefs is “academically defensible”.

    Dr Aaron Edwards misplaced his job after seven years as a lecturer at Cliff School, a Methodist faculty in Derbyshire, over feedback he posted on social media final yr.

    His tweet learn: “Homosexuality is attacking the church. Evangelicals don't see the seriousness of it anymore as a result of they’re busy apologizing for his or her blatantly barbaric homophobia, whether or not it's true or not.”

    The feedback have been made in response to a debate within the Church of England over the introduction of same-sex blessings.

    The tribunal, which met in Sheffield this week, heard that complaints have been made by three feminine college students, two of whom have been lesbian. The scholars claimed Dr Edwards' feedback made them really feel “unsafe”.

    After refusing to retract his feedback, he was fired for allegedly bringing the faculty “into disrepute”.

    Dr. Edwards informed the tribunal that he wished to “get up for the reality when it’s being undermined in society”.

    He stated he has been open about his religion in different writings, podcasts and sermons, and claimed the faculty knew about his views earlier than responding to his tweet.

    “In my seven years of educating at Cliff, I’ve by no means had a scholar take considered one of my courses elevate considerations about not feeling secure within the classroom, and no scholar has ever left suggestions exhibiting concern about expressing my views on homosexuality.

    The tribunal additionally heard he struggled to search out work after his launch.

    “Equality, variety and inclusiveness quotas stay important for all current universities and accredited schools,” he stated.

    “It’s already systemically troublesome for a heterosexual white male with conventional Christian ethical beliefs to acquire an educational place.”

    He added: “I imagine the general public expression of my beliefs is academically defensible, however many establishments are unlikely to have the ability to overlook the controversy of being fired in consequence.”
