When the Church of England's Normal Synod reconvened in London on Friday, the Reverend Ian Paul, a member of the Council of Archbishops, strongly disputed the agenda.

Suggesting that the synod had made “dodging actuality a little bit of an artwork kind”, he argued that the Church of England was “standing on the point of an abyss”. A chasm that might depart the subsequent technology with solely a “heap of ruins” to combat over.

Rev Paul recommended that the previous 10 years of discussions about sexuality had left the Church “extra anxious, divided and unsure than ever”, and held out little hope that the subsequent eight hours of debate – scheduled for subsequent week – would supply any solutions.

“Filming whereas Canterbury is burning doesn't even seize that,” he mentioned, pointing to the actual downside of a church on the point of collapse.

“Over the identical 10 years, grownup attendance dropped 30 p.c, kids's attendance dropped 40 p.c,” he mentioned.

He mentioned “there’s a very actual prospect of the service in massive elements of the Church of England collapsing fully throughout the subsequent 5 years”.

Nevertheless, it was clear to him that the decline was not inevitable.

“The Church in England will not be declining, different church buildings are rising,” he identified. “However we’re reluctant to study from them. We now signify lower than 18 p.c of all Christians in church on Sunday.”

This view is supported by the Bible Society, which discovered that the proportion of individuals attending church modified little or no between 2018 and 2023. Their analysis confirmed that 7% of the inhabitants go to church weekly and one in ten go to church as soon as a month.

In an article for Baptists Collectively, Baptist minister Mark Woods mentioned: “By way of total numbers, the church in England and Wales will not be declining. However it adjustments form and is much less and fewer white.

“Nevertheless, when historic denominations extrapolate a narrative of inevitable decline from their very own troubles, it turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy – who needs to sail on a sinking ship?”

This isn’t the primary time Reverend Pavel has tried to attract the Synod's consideration to those difficult statistics, and it most likely gained't be the final both. The query is whether or not anybody will pay attention.

“Brothers and sisters,” he completed, “if we proceed to keep away from this actuality, if we proceed this fruitless dialog, this would be the legacy we depart – the Church of England – a pile of ruins for the subsequent technology. us.”
