Scottie Scheffler speaks to his Christian faith when asked what defines him

If you look beyond his freakish abilities with a golf club in his hand and world-class competitiveness, there is nothing flash about Scottie Scheffler. The undisputed best player in the world comes across as one of the most-normal professional athletes one could imagine outside the ropes, with some critics even going as far as to say he is boring.

The majority of sports fans tend to gravitate towards flashy personalities, yet Scheffler is profoundly the opposite.

During his press conference ahead of the 2024 Masters, Scheffler was asked the simple yet somewhat deep question of what defines him as a person. This provided him with the opportunity to be honest, genuine, and share his belief in Jesus.

“I’m a faithful guy. I believe in a Creator. I believe in Jesus. Ultimately, I think that’s what defines me the most,” Scheffler said while getting a bit emotional.

“I feel like I’ve been given a platform to compete and, you know, show my talent. It’s not anything that I did. I think I sat up here a couple years ago doing the interview after the 2022 Masters, and it’s like, yeah, I was underprepared for what was about to happen. I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t — I was very anxious that morning. I didn’t know what to expect.”

“And it’s hard to describe the feeling, but I think that’s what defines me the most is my faith. I believe in one Creator, that I’ve been called to come out here, do my best, compete and glorify God, and that’s pretty much it.”

Scheffler has spoken about his faith in the past, and perhaps most memorably after he won the 2022 Masters in which he echoed his recent comments explaining that golf isn’t his identity.

“The reason why I play golf is, I am trying to glorify God and all that he’s done in my life, and so for me, my identity isn’t a golf score,” he told the media in 2022.

Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, is also a man of faith and often shares a ‘Sunday Sermon’ from various tournaments on his Instagram account.
